The possibility for success lies mostly in the subject, not only because it is necessary to discover one that interests the public, but especially because it is necessary to discover one that animates me and draws out of me all that I can give. . . .

Basically, only affairs of our time interest the public and interest me. The greatness and singularity of the spectacle that the world of our time presents absorbs too much attention for anyone to be able to attach much value to those historical curiosities that suffice idle and erudite societies.
